iPad 3 in 2011?

  • For some who felt that the latest iPad 2 doesn’t give them a big reason to jump and thought that most probably Apple will release iPad 3, you are going to get a big disappointment. Steve Jobs have declared that 2011 will the “The Year of iPad 2”.
  • Furthermore, Apple released the first Gen iPad in April 3, 2010. A normal Apple product cycle is always between 1-2 years. We might see iPad 3 in 2012... Let’s see..

Review: What is it like after 2 months owning an iPad?

Since its official release date on April 3, 2010 (WiFi version), the iPad had received numerous reviews - both good and bad. Many Forums received repeated questions such as should I buy the iPad or not, Macbook Air or iPad, iPad 3G or WiFi, etc.

Many early adopters just cannot wait to own an iPad because Apple release the official iPad only in certain selected countries. Singapore will get their sometime in July 2010 but nowhere in the time frame mentioned about Malaysia.

Personally, I managed to purchase the iPad when I was in Taiwan and ggot it after 2 weeks of its official release. Malaysians also can buy their iPad at some shops especially at Low Yat Plaza or even in some of the Net Forums like Low Yat Net. But the cost is still way too high as compared to the price which was released in USA. Its the price that early adopters need to pay - premium. The advantage is that these users have early experience of using an iPad. It certainly attracts other users in envy.

In my earlier posts, I have indicated how I am going to use the iPad in my daily life. That was quite sometime ago. Okay - what is like after 2 months of using that "awesome" device?

Honestly, not all the things which I wished earlier became true in my daily usage. It needs discipline to make the iPad as your daily companion. So - what are my common applications which I used daily? They are:-

1 - Safari Browser - I used this quite a lot to browse the Net for more information. The ease of browsing is the key factor and I used this almost 80% of my usage time.
2 - Facebook client - Although iPad doesn't have a native application yet, it is still my favorite social networking client. Since I have Jailbreak the iPad, I can "force" the FB client to be like a "native iPad" app (unlike the 2x feature).
3 - Twitter Client - another past time of mine.
4 - ToDo - This app helps to manage my daily Things To Do. Excellent utility to remind me of TTD.
5 - BlogPress - excellent way to update my Blog.

Although I have purchased apps like Goodreader, DocsToGo, iAnnotate PDF, My Library etc. I still don't find the time to use them to the fullest.

The question remained - Are you a Consumer or Creator of contents? For most people, iPad are meant for people who consumed information a LOT more than creating contents. A laptop/notebook/desktop like the Macbook are great in creating contents e.g. word processing, powerpoint, spreadsheet, photo or movie editing etc.

Looking at the usage above, I am still a "Consumer" of information... :-)

In Search of the Best iPad Case...

Although I hve many times made online bill payments, funds transfer and subscribing to online services, the feeling is not the same as making physical purchase over the internet.

For example, buying a bag is very difficult mainly because I cannot feel the material, visualize the size and looks of the bag. For example, recently I made a purchase of the iPad Messenger Bag from STM Bag. After a couple of weeks surveying the online for the right model, I decided STM Scout XS is the one but I am still undecided because there are not many reviews on the Net. Some are good and some aren't. A better source of review would be fromYoutube since someone can actually show and comment almost single thing about the Bag. This is quite useful.

Another problem is the color looks different from the website and the one being reviewed over the Youtube.

Finally, after choosing the model and color, the problem would be where to purchase. Couple of sites allowed us to buy online but only Amazon allow to deliver to an overseas address.

Adding the postage and handling is really expensive especially for single purchase. Once ordered, its a matter of anxiously waiting for the parcel to arrive. It more more than 7 business days to arrive. Not bad. I was expecting on June 24 but arrived on June 9.

However, for this first real online purchase, I am very satisfied with the product and delivery.

STM Scout XS Review

Received my iPad bag today from STM Bag. Ordered this from Amazon which is shipped on June 2. The parcel actually arrived on June 11 but unable to deliver since there is no one at home to accept.

Picked up the bag at the Post Office.

Quite a small bag with the size 10".

It can fit both the iPad and Wireless Keuboard nicely and snuggly. It got enough padding to ensure the iPad is safe from any knocks.

Even tho' it can be seen like keyboard slightly portrude, however, when it is tucked with the bag's flap, it looks quite fitting.

In Search of an iPad Bag

For the past week, have been evaluating many iPad Messenger Bags on the Net. The ones which attracted me can't be purchase directly from Amazon or online due their shipping restrictions are only US based.

Some products don't have enough reviews thus quite worried to buy.

This will be a tough week for me. Need to do more research on this during my spare time.

After 1 month using iPad

How often do I use the iPad?
As for me, for the past 1 month U have been busy identifying the right software to download and use. Have been reading alot of reviews.
Finally, Jailbreaking opens up more possibilities for me to test a lot more apps.
I prefer to download "Productivity" apps as compared to others because I see the iPad as a tool to increase my Productivity.

The question - Is it really true that iPad can increase my Productivity?

Even after a month, I don't have much time to explore the features of the apps which I have installed.
Maybe more than 80% usage of iPad is for browsing purposes. Most probably because its very easy to press a simple button and click Safari and in a few seconds, you are visiting the intended sites. Unlike, the laptop which requires a few minutes to boots up. And of course, the iPad screen is no match for iPhone.

Another common app is BlogPress, which is the one I am currently using to post my Blog. Since it is Universal, I have it installed on both iPad and iPhone.

I have 3 ToDo apps i.e ToDo, List N Do and Taska... All three of them sync seamlessly using te onlite task manager Toodledo.com. Very convenient.

iPad vs iPhone Usage

People ask me - now after you have purchased the iPad, did you use it regularly and more often than iPhone?
Frankly speaking.... No.
Reason being, iPad is not meant to be carrying around 100% of the time. The size limits the mobility. Unlike iPhone, which you can simply carrying around in the phone case which is placed around the belt.

However, I used iPad regularly when I am home. More often compared to my Macbook and iPhone. How about in the office? Hmmm... I am yet to to be comfortable carrying around in meetings. Its still odd having to replace the Pen and Paper. Not wanting the Boss or colleagues look at you differently during meetings. They might have thought you are not focusing on the meeting but instead busy browsing or do other things...

In my organization, there are currently 2 people using iPads as compred to iPhones.
So, its a matter of time for me to being comfortable carrying the iPad.

Blogging via iPhone and iPad

How easy can we get with Blogpress app?

Can iPad replace yr traditional Pen and Paper?

Normally what do we carry to meeting? A diary or notepad with pen.

So what can an iPad do? For people who have not been using computer or their PDA for daily use, they might find an iPad to be quite an odd device to use.
Actually, with the right skills, mindset and of course the right appliations, iPad will transform the way you work.

The default apps such as Safari Browser, Email and Calendar are a must.
However, we need other productivity apps to complement what's missing.
I have GoodReader to read pdf files but the iAnnotate app give the extra capability to annotate pdf files. No longer the need for me to print all the pdf files and carry them around!

My List N Do will help me to remind the big and small To-Dos for the week or month. Imagine having this To-Do list everywhere cos I can sync with iPhone too!

Apple Note app is quite simple, that's why I purchased Paperdesk. I can insert photos and also leave an audio note.

Yesterday, I was evaluating few apps for mind mapping and finally decided to buy MindNode. Easy to use app which can easily jot down my thoughts.

Who wanna buy iPad now? Or wait...?

It depends...

The launch of iPad in Malaysia is unknown but speculation has been going around that it might be end of May or June.

If you can wait and don't want to buy an at a more expensive price (forking out extra RM 800-RM 1000) more, then don't buy now.

But others felt the extra money worth every sen. Having to use it now to the fullest can't simply describe the thrilling excitement. No more anxiously waiting while seeing others using it..
